Experiencing the Magic of Onam: A Memorable Week

This week was nothing short of magical, as we got to experience the joy, culture, and colors of Onam, Kerala’s most cherished festival. Onam is not just about rituals — it is about unity, togetherness, and celebrating our rich traditions, and this week reflected all of that beautifully.

On 26th August, Sujith sir invited us to the Government College of Teacher Education for the grand Onasadya. The traditional feast, served on banana leaves, was a delightful spread of flavors, with dishes like sambar, avial, olan, thoran, and the sweet payasam completing the meal. The teachers were very happy to see us, and we felt an immense warmth in their company. We also shared our school experiences, which made the gathering more memorable. Later, Issac sir invited me to the Commerce Club Inauguration and proudly introduced me to my juniors — a moment that truly strengthened my bond with the institution.

The next day, on 27th August, the spirit of Onam bloomed at Model Boys High School. With the help of enthusiastic students, we designed a vibrant Pookkalam (floral carpet) in front of the library. The fragrance of fresh flowers and the colorful patterns added charm to the celebration.

The air was filled with excitement as students showcased traditional dance performances, melodious songs, and cultural skits that portrayed the legends of King Mahabali and the essence of Onam. Later, fun-filled activities like musical chairs, vadam vali (tug of war), and other traditional games brought both students and teachers together in laughter and joy. Being part of their Onam celebrations felt like being embraced into one big family.

On 29th August, the Higher Secondary Section took over the celebrations, making it equally special. The highlight was the graceful Thiruvathira dance performed by teachers, where they circled around a lamp in rhythmic steps, symbolizing harmony and grace. Students too gave their best with colorful programs, dance numbers, and songs.

Once again, the competitive spirit came alive with tug of war and other Onakalikal (Onam games), reminding us how Onam is as much about bonding through play as it is about tradition.

This week of Onam celebrations was truly an unforgettable experience. From savoring the Onasadya to enjoying the cultural performances, from arranging flowers for the Pookkalam to cheering during games, every moment was filled with joy. Onam beautifully reminded us of the values of unity, gratitude, and happiness, making this week one of the most colorful chapters of our journey
