Teaching practice - Week 6
Weekly Reflection- 6
Small Efforts, Big Impact
This week, the Onam exam started for students, but there were no exams for the Plus One class. They were conducting exams only for Plus Two students, which were held in the afternoon. So, until 12:30, Plus One students had regular classes. I had one or two periods throughout the week, and this week, I was with my high school trainee teachers. We had assignments and practicum to complete. During our practicum, our group of ten members conducted an infrastructural assessment of Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School by preparing and distributing a structured checklist among students and collecting their responses.
The checklist covered key areas such as school building and campus, sanitation and drinking water, laboratories, library and ICT facilities, safety measures, and miscellaneous provisions. We explained the purpose of the activity to the students and guided them in filling out the checklist honestly based on their daily experiences. This method enabled us to gather authentic data directly from the student community, reflecting their perspective on the adequacy and condition of school facilities.
After collecting the filled checklists, we compiled and analyzed the responses as a group, identifying strengths such as a generally safe and clean campus, and weaknesses such as insufficient maintenance of sanitation facilities, limited digital learning resources, and the need for stronger safety measures.
Working together not only helped us distribute and collect data efficiently but also strengthened our teamwork, communication, and analytical skills. This practicum experience gave us valuable insights into how infrastructural facilities directly affect students' learning environment and highlighted the importance of continuous improvement in school facilities.
As part of our practicum activity, our group of ten members undertook the task of “School Library Cleaning and Beautification.” We started the work with great enthusiasm, dividing responsibilities among ourselves so that the activity could be carried out smoothly. Some members took charge of dusting and cleaning the shelves, while others focused on sweeping and arranging the furniture to make the space more orderly and welcoming.
Once the cleaning was completed, we moved on to arranging the shelves and systematically organizing the books. Old and misplaced books were carefully sorted, and the remaining collection was categorized and placed neatly. This made the library look more disciplined and ensured that students could find the books they needed with greater ease. The process of arranging books together also gave us an opportunity to cooperate and work as a team.
To enhance the beauty of the library, we prepared colorful charts with motivational quotes and educational messages. These charts were displayed on the walls, adding a vibrant and inspiring touch to the room. By the end of the activity, the library looked clean, organized, and lively. The sense of satisfaction we felt after completing the work was immense, as we realized our small effort had created a pleasant and attractive space for learning and reading.
